Pi Durable Platformdocs

What Pi Durable Platform is

A self-hosted console and API where teams deploy, test and manage durable agents built with Pi, and reach them from their own apps.

Pi Durable Platform is a self-hosted console and API for durable agents: agents built with the durable package of Pi, an open-source agent toolkit by other people. Pi Durable Platform is an independent project. It runs those agents; it is not part of Pi.

Teams use PDP to:

  • deploy agents from a catalog of reviewed templates;
  • test them in the console with a chat;
  • reach them from their own apps through the API, with a service account key or as a person who connected the app;
  • manage them: models, MCP servers, keys, usage and an audit log.

PDP is the console and the API, not the end-user product. People usually talk to agents through a team's own app, such as a chat app or a support tool. The app calls PDP, and PDP relays the conversation to the agent.

How an agent runs

Each agent keeps its conversations in its own PostgreSQL schema, with its own database role, in a database kept apart from the platform's own. Its conversations survive restarts and redeploys.

An agent runs in its own runtime (a Node.js process with Pi's durable package) only while it is used. When it has been idle for a while (10 minutes by default) it hibernates: the runtime stops and nothing of it runs. The next request wakes it. So a platform can hold thousands of agents, one per user of an app, while only the busy ones run.

Your app or the console ──► Pi Durable Platform ──► the agent's runtime ──► its schema in PostgreSQL
                            (sign-in, roles, keys, (started on demand,
                             templates, models, audit) hibernates when idle)

Apps never reach a runtime directly. Every request goes through the platform, which checks who is calling and what they may use, then relays the conversation as server-sent events.

On Kubernetes each runtime is a pod, or a Kubernetes Agent Sandbox with an optional warm pool of standby runtimes. On a developer's machine runtimes are local processes.

Who these docs are for

What it is not, yet

PDP v0.1.0 is the first release and pre-1.0 software. Some things are planned and not built:

  • Teams can't upload their own agent code. Agents come from templates: instructions, a model and MCP servers. Uploads need stronger runtime isolation first.
  • There are no files or images. Messages are text.
  • Personal workspaces record a monthly budget but don't enforce it.
  • An agent that hibernates can't wake itself for scheduled work.

See Release notes v0.1.0 for the full list.
