Testing an agent

The Test tab of an agent in Pi Durable Platform's console: chats, what each message shows, stopping a reply and what wakes the agent.

Each agent in Pi Durable Platform has a Test tab: a chat with the agent, sending messages the same way an app would. Open it from the team's Agents (or All agents), then the agent, then Test. Every member of the team can use it; service-managed agents have no Test tab because their conversations belong to an app's users.

Chats

The list on the left holds the conversations (threads) you can see, most recently used first. Each shows its title, whether a reply is running, and whether the last reply failed.

  • New chat starts a thread. Its title is the first line of your first message (up to 60 characters).
  • On a team's agent, choose Shared or Private before you send the first message. Shared means everyone who can use the agent sees it; Private means only you. The choice is fixed by the first message. See Shared and private threads.
  • Delete a chat to stop it and remove it from the agent's list.

The first time you open the tab it opens the most recently used chat.

What a message shows

  • Your messages show who sent them. On a shared thread that may be another member, or an app acting for someone.
  • The agent's replies stream in as they are written, with any reasoning and tool calls. Under each finished reply is a line such as model-name · 1,234 tokens · 3.2s: the model, the tokens it used, how long it took and, when it didn't end normally, why (for example Length limit or Stopped).
  • Tool calls show their input, their output and how long they ran.

Older messages, from before the platform recorded these details, show what they have.

Stopping a reply

While the agent is replying, the send button becomes a stop button. Stopping ends the reply in progress; the conversation keeps what was written so far. A message you send while a reply is running isn't lost: it waits, and the agent answers it after the current reply.

When the agent is asleep or off

  • An agent that has hibernated wakes on your message. The first reply takes a few seconds longer.
  • If the agent is turned off (in its Settings), the Test tab says so and refuses new messages. An editor can turn it on again.
  • If the agent's model is no longer available to the team, the agent won't start until an editor chooses another model in Settings.

Conversations are durable

A conversation lives in the agent's own database schema. It survives reloads, platform restarts, the agent hibernating and the runtime being replaced. A reply cut short by a restart resumes when the agent next runs.
